LLM Price Performance Analysis: Which Model Offers the Best Value?

Karl-Heinrich Wolff April 15, 2024 Updated: April 14, 2024

With so many language models available, choosing the right one can be overwhelming. We analyzed performance benchmarks and pricing to identify the best values.

Methodology

We evaluated models based on:

  • Performance: Standard benchmarks (MMLU, HumanEval, etc.)
  • Cost: Input/output token pricing
  • Context: Maximum context window
  • Specialization: Coding, reasoning, multimodal capabilities

Overall Price-Performance Leaders

1. Claude 3.5 Sonnet

The sweet spot for most use cases:

  • Strong performance across all benchmarks
  • Reasonable pricing at $3.00/$15.00 per 1M tokens
  • 200K context window
  • Excellent for coding and reasoning

2. GPT-4o

OpenAI's balanced offering:

  • Native multimodal capabilities
  • Competitive pricing at $2.50/$10.00
  • 128K context window
  • Widely available and supported

3. Gemini 1.5 Flash

Google's value champion:

  • 1M context window at low cost
  • Pricing of $0.075/$0.30 per 1M tokens
  • Good performance for simple tasks
  • Excellent for document processing

Specialized Use Cases

Coding Champions

  • GPT-5 Codex: Industry-leading code generation
  • Claude Code: Excellent debugging and documentation

Speed & Cost

  • GPT-4o-mini: Ultra-fast and cheap
  • Claude Haiku: Balanced speed and capability

Context Kings

  • Gemini 1.5 Pro/Flash: 1M token context windows
  • GPT-5: 400K context with better reasoning

Detailed Price-Performance Ratio

To calculate the price-performance ratio, we divided benchmark scores by cost per million tokens:

  1. Gemini 1.5 Flash: 8.2
  2. GPT-4o-mini: 7.9
  3. Claude 3.5 Sonnet: 6.7
  4. GPT-4o: 6.5
  5. Claude 3 Opus: 5.8
  6. GPT-4 Turbo: 5.4
  7. Gemini 1.5 Pro: 4.2
  8. Claude 4.1 Opus: 4.0

Recommendations

Based on our analysis, we recommend:

  • For general purpose use: Claude 3.5 Sonnet or GPT-4o
  • For mission-critical applications: GPT-5 Pro or Claude 4.1 Opus
  • For processing long documents: Gemini 1.5 Flash or Pro
  • For high-volume applications: GPT-4o-mini or Claude Haiku
  • For coding projects: GPT-5 Codex
